The Project

The General Contractor on this project, Martin Harris Construction, was looking for a provider to fabricate several aluminum awnings and an aluminum sunshade for their multi-family project in Las Vegas.

Based on the scope of work on the project, we determined that utilizing both our Helios and Atlas canopies would be the best solution.

We designed, fabricated, and installed 48 Helios canopies, two Atlas canopies, and a tube frame sunshade with a vertical return, all with a dark bronze powder coating to maintain a consistent look across the entire building. We went above and beyond for our client and delivered a stunning solution.

Martin Harris Construction was founded in Nevada and has since expanded to Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah. With years of experience, Martin Harris provides first-hand trade knowledge and a dedication to providing excellence, with the assurance that any subcontractor selected will be held to their high standard.

Spring Creek Office

Spring Creek Office | Project of the Month

Spring Creek Office

October

The Project

This Plano, TX office building has some unique architectural features to offer patients and visitors. The matte black entryway canopy and anodized silver wall tube screen design elements provide visitors with both practical protection from the elements and a unique visual aesthetic. The vertical wall tube screen also acts as a shield for privacy and further protects cars while under the porte cochere.

The architect on the project reached out to the AEC Representative to confirm the scope and get a proposal started with the Preconstruction team.

The rotunda entrance created a challenge of not only being radiused to the wall dimensions but also to provide integration of two different Arch-Fab systems to meet the architect’s vision. The inner part of the semicircle is soffited in order to provide full sun and rain coverage. The outer part integrates a system more similar to louvered sunshades, offering sun protection and louver elements.

The vertical wall tube screen was an additional scope that was designed to be floating from end to end, so an attachment was required to make this work.

To build the radiused rotunda Atlas, the standard gutter beam that supports the Atlas canopy model was extended to create outriggers for the louvers to attach to. This allowed for both systems to be seamlessly integrated.

In addition to the merging of two systems, it was crucial for Arch-Fab to make sure all parts were powder coated. The gutter beams are typically not visible and are not powder coated to save on cost. In this case, all teams were in communication to ensure all visible parts had a matte black finish.

For attachment of the tubes in the porte cochere, blocking was added by the GC, and we used L-brackets on one side of each tube to create equal alignment of each tube and a strong connection point for the 108″ tall tubes.

Biolabs

Biolabs - Starry Night Aluminum Trellis | Project of the Month

Biolabs

May

The Project

Biolabs Pegasus Park is a 23-acre, mixed-use office campus designed to bolster local biotech, social interaction, and corporate innovation. Turning an existing business facility into a welcoming, high-tech space for researchers, investors, consumers, and employees is no small task. At the newest Biolabs location, Arch-Fab helped create an environment for more than just work in a stunning outdoor space designed to facilitate collaborative conversations and provide a comfortable place for breaks and lunch. With CRB, Architectural Fabrication utilized new manufacturing technology to bring this vision to life.

Arch-Fab was approached by Design/Build General Contractor, CRB Builders, following their assessment of our expertise in designing and building custom trellis structures, canopies, and sunshades. Biolabs Pegasus Park was a great fit for Arch-Fab with its unique shade structure concept and our ability to perform as an End-to-End Architectural Metals Turnkey Solution.

The main challenge of this project was to design, engineer, fabricate and install a shade feature at the main entrance that created a unique industrial appearance while also establishing an inviting, high-tech aesthetic aligning with CRB’s vision. Rather than a standard walkway or trellis, Arch-Fab’s shade solution was as unique as it was functional, a custom structure featuring a “Starry Night” pattern produced using our newly acquired CNC waterjet cutter.

After developing plans using a standard perforated sheet metal, CRB reviewed completed Arch-Fab projects and inquired about how we could provide a custom panel solution. With the recent purchase of a waterjet machine, we had the ability to download CRB’s proprietary “Starry Night” pattern and efficiently produce custom panels that would be mounted to a standard post-supported trellis structure. This stunning shade structure provides a one-of-a-kind design and an inviting, modern space offering privacy and sun protection.

CRB was very pleased with the final product and is excited to continue collaborating on future projects. Arch-Fab has hosted a Lunch and Learn with the CRB design team and we are currently collaborating on some exciting new projects.

Chipotle

Chipotle | Wall Panel Systems | Project of the Month

Chipotle

The Project

Chipotle Mexican Grill is a casual fast-food establishment known for its fresh, healthy ingredients. Their expansion plan changed dramatically, due to COVID-19, requiring new solutions as they added the “Chipot-lane” to meet the needs of the time. Over the past two years, Arch-Fab has developed solutions and patent-pending products to be a partner to Chipotle with wall panels, canopies, and slat wall trellises.

Arch-Fab’s national account relationship started as a solution to replace the rusting Corten panels that originally enveloped the drive-thru. The natural rusting of the panels dripped down, creating unsightly rust stains on the pavement. In keeping with the same Corten finish, Arch-Fab’s longtime partner, Quality Powder Coating (QPC), reached out for a wall panel solution to replace the Corten.

Arch-Fab’s main challenge consisted of developing a work-flow process with better lead times developing high-quality products and repeatable systems. This would enable Chipotle’s architects and general contractors to easily design and install at multiple locations.

The other challenge was designing a wall panel system that was right for the needs of Chipotle. The drive-thrus are a unique architectural focal point that needed to be durable and mimic the previous Corten colors.

Architectural Fabrication leadership developed a new Extruded Aluminum Panel System that includes screw bosses for strength against wear and tear, plus a groove design for ease of installation. This patent-pending Wall Panel System has been integrated into our product line as a great alternative to fiber cement board.

QPC also provided several selections of corten-like powder coats that matched the style, but without any of the mess (no rust stains!). We also developed a reinforced canopy system modeled off of the Helios Canopy in order to remove overhead supports.

To meet the needs of Chipotle, Arch-Fab dedicated a Precon Specialist and Project Manager to oversee the management of all Chipotle work. They helped create a standard submittal package following the Chipotle prototype – increasing our speed when producing the submittal package for subsequent locations. This allowed for simple changes and edits to each package while keeping the details clear.

Our first designs created for Chipotle continued to evolve as we built products specific to the needs of Chipotle locations across the country. This project jumpstarted our entry into the Wall Panel space, creating new opportunities with local businesses and locking in our value as a provider to Chipotle.

3800 Acqua Apartments | Atlas Canopies & Fabric Awnings

3800 Acqua Apartments

January

The Project

Multifamily developer and general contractor, BECO LLC produced a central hub for living and thriving in Suffolk, VA. Designed by Housing Studio Architects, 3800 Acqua Apartments hosts several restaurants, entertainment, and retail spaces along with 291 apartment units and leasing spaces. This premier mixed-use project offers residents a resort-quality pool, dog park, clubhouse, fitness center, and more. Plus the town of Suffolk can also enjoy the easily walkable and safe shopping center on Aqua’s first floor.

Burt Cutright, BECO Owner, “BECO is extremely proud and excited to bring our vision of a community-centric, mixed-use development to Suffolk. Not only paving the way for an elevated live, work., play experience in the area, but also setting the start for future growth in the market.”

This was our first project with BECO, initiated by a formal proposal for Arch-Fab to provide a comprehensive turnkey solution for the complete canopy and awning scope of work.

The new multi-family project location was 1,400 miles away from Arch-Fab’s headquarters and the expected delivery was in the middle of winter.

In order to be an ideal partner for BECO on this project and future projects outside of Texas, Arch-Fab obtained DOT licensure, making 3800 Acqua Apartments our first DOT certified project. This enabled Arch-Fab to have more flexibility to maintain schedules and ensure product quality during transportation. Professional project management and carefully-planned logistics resulted in a successful project completed on time and under budget.

Following the successful 3800 Acqua project, we teamed up with BECO again on Royal Sails, a multi-family development also in Suffolk, VA. AS BECO continues to innovate and grow in new markets, Arch-Fab is ready to continue expanding this mutually-beneficial partnership.

“Partnering with BECO on 3800 Acqua, a stunning mixed-use development 1,400 miles away from our Fort Worth headquarters, exemplifies Arch-Fab’s ability to provide turnkey end-to-end architectural metal solutions,” explains Philip Klement, VP of Preconstruction. “Our team embraced unique challenges and greatly appreciated the professionalism of the BECO team. We look forward to our next venture together.”

The Brickyard – Farmers Branch

The Brickyard - Helios Canopy

The Brickyard – Farmers Branch

January

The Project

Billingsley wanted a turnkey solution provider to fabricate and install aluminum canopies, awnings, as well as a custom glass topped canopy. They understood that using steel for this scope of the project would result in ongoing maintenance which would be costly as well as disruptive to their tenants.

We designed, fabricated, and installed our fully extruded Helios canopies with a 6” fascia, domed awnings with Sunbrella fabric, and standing seam awnings on aluminum tube framework with a powder coated finish.

The GC on The Brickyard was Billingsley Construction, Inc. We have completed multiple projects together over the years and enjoy partnering with their team to create beautiful and functional living spaces.

Billingsley’s multi-family developments incorporate purposeful living with modern architecture and works of art. Billingsley provides life-enhancing apartment communities with over 4,000 multi-family units and almost 4,000 acres of master-planned communities.

The Project

Customer needed some exterior sun control on the first and second floors plus covering a few entrance doors. They also were looking to add some custom accent bands over select windows which needed to match the new sun control devices. They wanted industrial design with straight lines and oversized fascia.

We provided one of our typical sunshade designs including extruded aluminum components and mitered corners. The 19” fascia, however, was a total custom fabrication using anodized aluminum sheet which was formed and attached to the sunshade structures. We also integrated a few Helios canopies inside the sunshade structures as well as one stand alone unit to protect the entrance locations. The custom box style accent bands were fabricated using aluminum tube framing and the same anodized sheet material was used for the 12” fascia.

The GC on this project was Raymond Construction. We are excited about completing our first project with them and are looking forward completing more.

Natural Grocers

Natural Grocers - Keller

Natural Grocers

December

The Project

Customer needed canopies and awnings to match the several other Natural Grocers projects that we have completed. The original idea from the owner was for these exterior features to help provide more a modern feel for the stores. A clean look but still very functional in sun control and water drainage.

We provided our standard Helios model canopies and a lone metal awning at the bay door location. Our design and production teams worked seamlessly with the architects to target every detail and meet every deadline.

The GC on this project was McPherson Contractors, Inc. whom we have completed multiple projects with and are looking forward to completing many more.

McPherson Contractors, Inc. recognizes that their primary and most important asset is their people. To be successful, their people must love what they do, and respect the manner in which it is done. They provide an entrepreneurial and positive environment to help their people reach their potential and want to be part of the MCI family for their entire careers. In the same manner, they work with their clients as a team; mutual respect and ongoing relationships provide the foundation for their continued success.

Hard work, honesty, and quality are their founding values. Quality and value are their client’s primary objectives, so they focus their efforts on quality and value to strive to be the best client-centered building partner in the Midwest. They set high standards for themselves to provide quality service and personal attention to clients, and they pledge to find the best methods to deliver on their promises consistent with their founding values. They constantly strive to improve their means and methods, in order to provide greater value for their clients.

This project was designed by Vega Architecture which are based out of Golden, CO and we are proud to have a great professional relationship them.

Vega started with big ideas. They believed that it was time to redefine architecture — to fully integrate beautiful, highly functional design with rigorous budgetary and planning discipline. They believed they weren’t the only ones who felt this way. So, they built a team of people who share this urgency to create new ways of designing spaces that are both inspiring and fiscally responsible to the owners.

They focused on these ideas so intensely that they created their own, new approach — [a]VDC, the marriage of architecture and virtual design and construction. They told their clients that [a]VDC is more transparent and more accurate than any design process they had ever experienced. Then they proved it on real projects. And they are refining this approach with every new project they take on. Greater accuracy. More detailed planning. Freeing them to create excellent architecture.
